Coulter Family Returns to the Track:

After close to 10 months on the sidelines; the father and son duo of Steve and Michael Coulter returned to the track earlier this month at Queensland Raceway, near Ipswich in Queensland, for the opening round of the 2010 Australian Truck Racing Championship.

Not since the final round of last year’s Australian Championship in November had either Steve or Michael competed but at the completion of the weekend at Queensland Raceway it was hard to tell that they had spent so much time on the sidelines.

Steve last competed at the Queensland Raceway circuit since 2002, while for Michael it was his first time.

The current Australian Champions, Steve in the Light Trucks and Michael in the Co-Drivers Cup for Light Trucks, came away from the weekend with impressive results with Steve taking out the round for the Light Truck class and Michael finishing second in the Light Truck class for the Co-Drivers Cup.

Steve was able to finish on top in all three races for the Light Truck class and he capped off the weekend by dominating proceedings outright in the ‘Super Prix’ which is an event that he has had a lot of success in.

“During the off season we made a number of improvements to our truck and they helped us be on the pace from the beginning of the weekend,” expressed the current and four times Australian Champion who is this year shooting for five wins in succession. “The highlight of the weekend was my win in the Super Prix and it’s without a doubt my favourite event to take part in and one where I’ve been very successful.”

In the Co-Drivers Cup, Michael showed impressive speed but a bit of bad luck robbed him of the winning spoils. The current Australian Champion was in a winning position in both races but wasn’t able to came away with the win in either. The 19-year-old had the win in the bag during the opening race only to make a mistake on the final lap and finish back in second, while in the second race Michael paced the field only to be bump out of the way as he fought for the lead with another competitor and he once again finished in second place.

“It was great to get back behind the wheel, as it had been quite a while since I last competed and there were a few nerves getting back into it again,” said the second year driver, who had earlier in the weekend qualified second. “Over the weekend I learned quite a lot and although I made a few mistakes over the weekend it’s all part of the experience game.”

The second round of the Australian Championship is going to be fought out at Winton Motor Raceway in Victoria on the weekend of October 2 and 3.
